Many of us have dogs that live outdoors in a kennel. When you feel the first cold bit in the air to indicate that winter is on its way, there are some measures that you should take to ensure that your pets stay healthy. Floors in dog houses get very cold in winter, yet many of us never think that our poor dog has to lie on that cold floor. They haven’t got slippers to keep their paws warm, so we have to help them. Carpets keep a room warm, but if you have laminate or wooden flooring your pet will feel the cold when they are lying down through the day. A rug will keep them warmer, or even better, a heated pet mat. Why Your Dog May Be Scratching Nonstop

It’s annoying when our dogs scratch and their hairs fly everywhere. Here are a few things that could be causing the irritation.

First of all you need to examine your dog’s fur to see if there is any sign of fleas. They will be visible if your animal is infested, alternatively, one random flea could have bitten him and caused an allergic reaction.

After a good search you find no fleas in his coat, you should try flea control for approximately four weeks to see if it had been an allergy to a fleabite.

Dogs can suffer from many different kinds of skin ailments. The common symptoms are red moist skin or maybe an odor. These can be caused by fungi, bacteria and even bites from other bugs. A special shampoo may do the trick, if it doesn’t you may need an antibacterial medicine from your vet.

Mange is a skin problem that is very uncomfortably and causes your pet to lose fur when they scratch.

The only way to diagnose Mange is for a vet to take scrapings of skin and for them to be checked in a laboratory to see if the mite is present. The vet will then prescribe medication.

So you have ruled out all of the above yet your dog is still scratching, what d you do next? A major possibility is now an allergy to something in or around the home. This could be anything from dust to plants and pollen.

If there is a pattern to his scratching and it worsens during the warm weather it many be an allergy to pollen or grass.

It can take a long time to pin down the cause of your pets itching, but is well worth it as you will have a healthy and much happier dog who is free of that irritating itch.

The Impact Of Hard Water From Your Domestic Supply

Water which contains a high level of dissolved minerals is generally referred to as “hard water”. The two most important minerals are calciun and magnesium. Hard water has no health implications – but it can lead to the build up of mineral deposits in plumbing, heating systems, kettles, dishwashers and various other domestic appliances. It has a poorer performance than soft water when using soap and general detergent products – you get less lather.

Water, quite naturally filters through rock and soil, and during this process small quantities of minerals are dissolved and held in solution in the water. The level of hardness increases as the amount of magnesium and calcium in the solution rises.

There are two distinct types of water hardness – known as permanent and temporary hardness. Both of these are the result of mineral content in the water.

Permanent hardness will not be removed by boiling. It is usually caused by the presence of calcium and magnesium sulfates and/or chlorides in the water. Despite its name it can actually be removed, usually by using a water softener or ion exchange column, which exchanges calcium and magnesium ions with sodium ions in the column.

Temporary hardness can be removed by boiling the water – or by adding lime. The cause of this is the presence of calcium and bicarbonate ions in the water. When the water is boiled the bicarbonates form carbonates and calcium carbonates are removed from the solution. After this, the water will be softer when it cools.

Scaling – frequently termed “limescale” – is the result of mineral deposits which are formed after the hard water has evaporated. Limescale can clog up plumbing, form chalky deposits in electric kettles and dramatically reduce the efficiency and lifespan of household appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers.

However, there are some relatively simple and easy steps which you can take in order to combat the effect of hard water in your home.

First of all, pick the right soaps and detergents. There are plenty of washing powders and liquid cleaners specifically designed for use in hard water areas. Selecting the correct one will not only get your dishes and clothes cleaner more easily, but will increase the working life of your domestic appliances by lowering the build up of limescale.

Another good tip is to set your water boiler to operate at a lower temperature. The higher the water temperature, the greater the amount of minerals that are released from the water will be. These will be deposited in your pipes, your water tank and will eventually find their way into your various household appliances which are connected to the hot water feed. Operating both your dishwasher and washing machine at lower temperatures will also yield some improvement.

Finally, if your primary concern is dissatisfaction with the taste of your water then simply filtering the water will usually make a noticeable difference. You can install an inexpensive under sink filter or even get a unit which fits directly onto the tap. Simple and inexpensive jug type filters are also effective if you want only relatively small quantities of filtered water for drinking and cooking.
