Conceiving with PCOS

A major cause of infertility in women is PCOS, or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. It can develop as a reaction to the body producing too much insulin. A woman suffering from this problem may find that in order to counteract the insulin, her body will begin to produce androgens and male hormones. Naturally this affects the body in many different ways, one of which is infertility and so it can be very hard getting pregnant with PCOS.

PCOS brings out many other effects in a woman’s body also. As every woman is different, the symptoms and effects felt from PCOS also differ from woman to woman. There are some common symptoms such as type two diabetes, an increase in facial hair, hair on the back and chest accompanied by a loss of head hair; acne and pelvic pain among others. For some women, all this symptoms amount to nothing when compared to infertility.

A normally menstrual cycle is disrupted by PCOS. During a normal cycle the ovaries will develop a number of follicles on them which contain the eggs. With the progression of the cycle, one follicle will develop where the others will not, and from this follicle the egg is released in ovulation. There is a hormone called LH which is responsible for setting this all in motion, and the body responds in the menstrual cycle to rising levels of LH. Sufferers of PCOS don’t normally release enough of the hormone to actually bring on ovulation. This means that all those follicles that come at the start of the cycle and usually develop into eggs don’t mature, and many simply turn into cysts. When women get ultrasound tests done, it is these cysts which show up. These cysts often share the appearance of a string of pearls around the ovaries. PCOS can also make the menstrual period very irregular, or make it stop coming at all.

This condition is not always discovered. Not all women have trouble getting pregnant with PCOS even with an irregular cycle there are those who can still conceive and birth a healthy baby. Estimated put the figure at around five or ten percent of women have PCOS.

What are some of the solutions and things which can help PCOS sufferers? Some women have had success with simply loosing weight, as this can help to trigger a hormonal rebalance in the body. There are drug treatments available for PCOS, however there is no need to run headlong into a harsh treatment when so many herbal and natural remedies exist for managing PCOS successfully. The unfortunate state of the world is that there are too many ‘wonder pills’ being touted as the cure to whatever it is we suffer from. Lots of these drugs are simple tested for short-term side effects, without any studies made of their long term effects, or the effects on the next generation. These drugs are still doled out, even when evidence is surfacing that links them to cancer.

A friend of mine, I’ll call her Candy for the purposes of this article had PCOS from childhood. Candy had PCOS without knowing it, and was only diagnosed when she was 17 and requested some tests from her doctor. Her real concern was that she may not be able to get pregnant in later years, as her menstruation had always been irregular. The tests she got back showed that she had a very severe case of PCOS. Because she was so concerned she went to see a specialist to see what could be done, and find out if she would still be able to have kids when the time was right. This specialist informed her that despite the PCOS, they could just administer her with drugs when she wanted to have children, even though these are the same drugs that are responsible for women having multiple births and other complications. Needless to say, she is in no hurry to be going back to that ‘specialist’ for those drugs.

It may help you to know the end of Candy’s story – not long after she got some more tests done to see what was going on in her body, and after a good cleanse, and the inclusion of lots of fresh organic fruit and veggies in her diet, the PCOS had shrunk, and in the end disappeared altogether. And when the time was right, her chances of getting pregnant were just like normal women.

The problems getting pregnant with PCOS and even the condition itself can be testament to an internal system out of balance, where the body simple cannot sustain a growing baby. By tackling to root cause of the problem, the health of your body and it’s internal balance, it is possible to overcome PCOS and achieve a healthy conception and have a baby naturally.
